Obituary for Bob W. Pope

POPE, Bob – At age 97, Bob Pope passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 22, 2020, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kitchener. He was predeceased by his wife Isobel (2011). Survived by son Paul Pope (Marg) and daughters Lee Howard (John) and Rae Pope (Doug). Much loved by grandchildren Jen Kellett (Sean), David Pope (Annalise), Ainslee Howard (Stu), Erica Shortt (Chris), Jesse Orth (Katie) and Nolan Orth (Jenna). His legacy continues with great grandchildren, Daley, Myriam, Mae, Brynn, Callum, Ben, Annika, Holly, Wesley, Anya and one more on the way.
Bob certainly got his money’s worth and more out of life. He was truly a man of his generation, a gentleman’s gentleman, a WWII airforce vet, a responsible and loving husband and father. After serving overseas in the war, he began his lifelong career with Immigration Canada. In 1945 he married Isobel (MacGillivray). He built their forever home in 1950 on Hodgson Avenue in Niagara Falls where many lifelong friendships and memories were forged. He was the last of the original neighborhood. His quiet manner often masked a wonderful sense of humour and he loved to entertain. A cheerleader in the thirties, a drummer in a dance band in the sixties and seventies, then a barbershop singer with the St Catharines Singing Saints until he moved to Waterloo in 2015, he was quick to break into song and dance whenever given the opportunity. He often had just the right costume at the ready as he entertained his neighbours and friends. In Westhill retirement home he embraced many activities and new friendships.
Bob and Isobel were lifelong volunteers giving of their time (and baked goods) to Lundy’s Lane United Church, meals-on-wheels, school breakfast programs and Project Share.
As one of his 23 nieces and nephews described him, “Uncle Bob was quite a character.”
Cremation has taken place. A joyful celebration of Bob’s life will be held when we can all get together again. Those who wish may make a memorial donation to the local food bank.
