Obituary for Cosmo Menechella

MENECHELLA, Cosmo - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Cosmo Menechella, a cherished husband, father and grandfather. Left to mourn his loss is his loving wife of 57 years Gina, his daughters Maria Menechella (Patrick Steier) and Laura Menechella (William Prestia) and his grandchildren Cosmo, Nicholas, Michael, Joseph and Geena.
Cosmo came to Canada from Italy as a 15 year old and settled in Niagara Falls. He initially trained as a barber and then started his career in hospitality with his brothers that spanned more than 50 years. His vision was instrumental in the development of the tourist district of Niagara Falls. Cosmo was proud to be a Canadian and happy to raise his family and grow his business in Niagara Falls. He was a supporter of many local causes.
Cosmo will be remembered as a kind and caring individual, fair and calm, a smart and successful businessman. He was a true gentleman, and lived his life with grace and respect for others. He loved his family and encouraged them to be good people, to treat others with respect and to enjoy life. He enjoyed good food, good music, dancing, golfing, corny jokes and playing cards. He had a wonderful sense of humour and was quick to share his wittiness with others. He was recognized for his efforts and received numerous awards as a pioneer in hospitality.
From humble beginnings, he and Gina enjoyed their many travels, most especially their beloved hometown of Molinara, Italy. He was so content to share his roots with his grandchildren so they could be proud of their Italian heritage and enjoy their home in Italy. He will be missed by his many cousins in Molinara.
He and Gina were equally happy in Florida, where he was feared on the golf course as a fierce competitor. He didn’t boast about his seven holes-in-one, but was definitely proud to tell you about them! So many happy times were shared with his sons-in-law and so many others on the golf course.
Cosmo is predeceased by his parents Carmelo and Mariantonia Menechella, his in-laws Cosimo and Maria Girolamo, his brothers John and Mario. He is survived by his sisters-in-law Michelina and Candida Menechella, his brother Victor (Lina) Menechella, his sister Phyllis DiCienzo, his brother-in-law Rocco Girolamo (Nina) and his many nieces and nephews who loved their Zio Cosimo. Cosmo will also be missed by his golf family at Frenchman’s Reserve in Florida.
The family would like to thank those who provided Cosmo with excellent care and compassion - Dr. Michael Levesque and his staff, Dr. Cuthbert and his staff, the 3rd floor nursing staff at the Walker Family Cancer Centre, Dr. Ian Brown, Dr. Stephanie Tatzel, Dr. Fiona Halliday, WIN Health and especially Mandeep Singh Sethi, Claire McMillan and her team with Home and Community Care, especially nurse Chris.
A private funeral has taken place. A heartfelt thank you to the pallbearers that accompanied Cosmo to his final resting place – Ryan Foss, Mike Lewis, Lou Mignardi, Rocco Strazzella and his grandsons Nicholas and Joseph Prestia, and Cosmo and Michael Steier. Thank you to his precious granddaughter Geena for the gift of her lovely voice at mass. Thank you to Father Daniel Corso and Mary Flynn from Our Lady of the Scapular Church for the lovely service, as well as Brooke Bateman and Sandra DiCienzo for the beautiful music during mass. Thank you to Ernie Morgan and Scott Langford of Morse & Son Funeral Home for their guidance and professionalism with the funeral arrangements and Michael Delduca at Fairview Mausoleum. Thank you to the management and staff at The Keg Steakhouse + Bar on Victoria Avenue for a lovely luncheon to allow his family and friends to celebrate his life.
