Obituary for Helen Marie Christie (Huggins)

CHRISTIE, Helen Marie, O.N. (nee Huggins) passed away peacefully on Monday, March 1, 2021 at her home in Windsor, Ontario, at the age of 88. Predeceased by her best friend and beloved husband of 51 years, Erl Peter Christie, loving daughter, Lori Watson, sister- in-law Ulva Huggins, brother-in-law Richard Christie and parents Jean and Andrew C. Huggins. She will be deeply missed by her son David (Susan de la Plante) and daughter Suanne Hawkins (Ben McVeety) and her grandchildren Kyla, Britney, Matthew, and Sydney. She is survived by her brother Bill Huggins of Niagara Falls, her brother-in-law Roy (Pat) Christie of Mississauga and sister-in-law Barb Christie of Mississauga and many nieces and nephews. Helen was born and raised in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and she and Erl raised their family there. It gave her great joy to cook, bake and care for her family and Helen was especially proud of her grandchildren and all they have accomplished. Working at Fashion Foremost, a women’s clothing store on Queen Street was something Helen also enjoyed. Helen and Erl loved to dance as much as possible and they also travelled the world together extensively. Helen was a long-time member at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church and a long-standing member of the church choir where her love of music was obvious. She was awarded the Order of Niagara by the Anglican Bishop of Niagara for her service to the church and community. Helen was a loyal volunteer for several groups including The Greater Niagara Hospital and Out of the Cold, and she was a past member of the Kinettes and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Helen moved to Windsor in 2018, where she had a beautiful apartment overlooking the Detroit River and skyline. Mom was so very appreciative for all the staff at Amica Retirement Home; their love, compassion and care were exemplary. Mom has left her footprints of love on so many hearts. With the current Covid 19 restrictions the family will live stream a celebration of life on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at 1:00 pm.
