Obituary for Joan May Jack (Hoyland)

Jack, Joan May 1927 - 2021
With Sadness we announce the passing of Joan on Thursday, October 21, 2021, At Wildwood Care Centre in St. Mary’s, at the age of 94. Beloved Wife to Elsworth (pre-deceased 2001) of 51 years. Loving Mother of Kathy (pre-deceased 2004) (Max), Gordon (Sharon). Cherished Grandmother of Geordie, Neil (Janet), Hilary (Andrew) and Erica. Great-grandmother of Ophelia, Gallagher, Lennon, and Jasper. Joan is pre-deceased by her brother Bill and by his wife Ruby. Joan will be deeply missed by her nieces Kimi and Tami. Joan graduated from Women’s College Hospital in 1948 and worked as a registered nurse before taking a nursing position at Anson General Hospital in Iroquois Falls, Northern Ontario. It was there that, Joan met Elsworth, newly returned from service after WWII. They met, married and raised their children in Iroquois Falls before moving to Niagara Falls when Elsworth retired.
Joan played piano and sang in the choir at St. John’s Anglican Church, then after playing piano for many years she learned to play flute, performing with one of Niagara’s orchestras. She instilled an appreciation of music in her children, Gordon learning piano and later switching to guitar. Volunteering was a big part of Joan’s life. She had a big heart and applied her love of others by volunteering for various organizations such as the Latchkey Program and the Women’s Auxiliary. Some charities that were of importance to her were Covenant House for homeless youth, Women’s Shelters and organizations in support of indigenous peoples. Arrangements have been entrusted to MORSE & SON FUNERAL HOME, Niagara Falls. As per Joan’s wishes cremation has already taken place. Her family will hold a private interment at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa in the spring. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish, may make a memorial donation to Niagara Women’s Place Inc., Water First, Inspire Indigenous Scholarship Fund and Youth Without Shelter.

We wish we could have had her with us longer, but we’re happy she is now at peace.
