Obituary for John T. "Jack" Whalen

WHALEN, John (Jack) Thomas

Sadly, we announce the passing of John (Jack) Whalen at home on January 29th at the age of 92. Jack leaves behind Betty, his wife of 67 years, his children Christina (Craig) and Alex (Kathy), his grandchildren William (Emma), Emily (Jason), Kailey, Samantha and Kyle and his great-grandchildren Seth and Ella. Family was extremely important to Jack and he will be fondly remembered by his sister Mary (Fred), brother Arnold (Shirley) and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Jack was raised on the family farm in Renfrew Ontario. He started as an electrician in Renfrew and eventually made his way to Niagara Falls with the hydro to work on the Sir Adam Beck Number 2. When this job was done, Jack was hired by the city of Niagara Falls. In 1958, Jack and Betty took the opportunity to move to Pakistan for two years where Jack supervised work being done on a powerhouse and dam in the northwest of the country. On return, Jack worked at the Welland Chemical and finally left there to work at General Motors where he spent the next 31 years until he retired. He always said that retirement was the best job of all.

The family would like to thank Dr Dargaval, Donna and Diana for their care of Jack over the years, nurses Pretty and Olivia who made it possible to support Jack at home at the end and his wonderful PSWs Amanda, Vanessa and Marissa who always arrived with a smile and a word of encouragement.

As per Jack’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to Morse & Son Funeral Home. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish may make a memorial donation to Project Share in Niagara Falls. A celebration of Jack’s life will take place later this year at his favourite place in the world, the hunt camp on the original family farm in Admaston Township, where we will all share a toast with Crown Royal!
