Obituary for Julianna Hauer (Schankula)

HAUER, Julianna - Oct, 1929 to Oct 29. 2022 - Passed away peacefully on October 29, 2022 at the age of 93 years old. She is predeceased by Husband Michael 2018 & daughter Dianne 2014, and survived by sons Werner (Alicia), Michael (Luanne) & Robert & many beloved grandchildren & great-grandchildren. She also has a remaining very close cousin Joseph Schankula of Niagara Falls.

Born in Welland Ontario as her Father Peter and many others came from abroad after WW1 & the partition of Austria Hungary/ Treaty of Trianon to work on the Welland Canal during the mid 1920's. As the great depression came in the 1930's, she returned with her parents to their ancestral village which was now within Romania. She left again during WW2 with the Russian invasion in 1944. She eventually fled to Germany, and after years in a refugee village, she met her future husband. She came back to Canada on her own in 1948 with husband eventually coming to join her. She went through many trials as a young girl.

Julianna and Michael managed to build 4 houses starting in 1956 being at times their own contractors. Hard work and saving, they did it like many other new immigrants despite having no to little language skills and no Government support during those times. She excelled at cooking, especially her Native Hungarian dishes which she had down to precision plus the amazing pastry skills she learned on her own that are still renowned today. Julianna also had a hairdressing business in her home for many years and even sold cakes occasionally to the Prince of Wales.

Julianna is resting at Morse & Son Funeral Home, 5917 Main Street where her family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 from 11 am to 1 pm.
