Obituary for Marion Elizabeth McGarry, RegN (Brough)

MCGARRY, Marion Elizabeth, RegN (nee Brough)
It is with great sadness that the family of Marion McGarry, announce her passing, at Chippawa Creek at Bella Care Residence in Niagara Falls, ON on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at the age of 88, after a brief illness. Marion was born to William and Edith Brough on August 14, 1933 in Chippawa, ON. She enjoyed a happy childhood until the tragic and unexpected passing of her mother, at the age of 10. Marion graduated from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Hamilton, ON in May 1954 as a registered nurse. Upon graduation, she pursued her lifelong passion of nursing. Her career extended for 44 years until her retirement in 1998. Marion’s compassion and knowledge along with her excellent nursing skills, whom she learned from Sisters Virginia and Bonaventure (respectively) at St. Joseph’s, made her an iconic figure in the nursing profession. During Marion’s extensive career, she nursed almost entirely in acute medicine at the Greater Niagara General Hospital, in Niagara Falls, ON. She was well respected by many physicians, colleagues, staff and patients for her knowledge, intellect and exemplary nursing practice. Marion is survived by her three loving and much loved daughters, Jane Mashford, Susan Martin (Robert) and Barbara Mashford (the late Keith, 1997). She was the cherished grandmother of James (Tracey), William (Sarah) and Jonathan (Brooke) Copfer; Natalie, Jeffrey and Elaine (Alex) Martin; and Elizabeth Anderson Dixon (Jason ) and Matthew Anderson. In more recent years, Marion adored her eight great-grandchildren. Marion is also survived by her brother-in-law, Paul Thomas. Marion is predeceased by her first husband Howard Mashford (2001 ) and her second husband, James Peter McGarry ( 2005 ). She is also predeceased by her only sibling E. Constance Thomas ( 2018 ). Marion was the dear friend for many years of the late Flossie Mashford (2011). The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Brian Bassil for his many years of excellent medical care; and to Dr. Patrick Pang during Marion’s almost one year stay at Bella for his kindness, expertise and attentiveness. Many thanks, too, to the entire staff at Bella and especially the Vineyards staff, for their wonderful care and concern. However, there aren’t enough words to give thanks to Anna (RPN) who went above and beyond the call of duty, day in and day out, to ensure that our mother’s needs were being met. We will never be able to express our endless gratitude for her undying dedication and exceptional nursing care. Cremation has taken place. A private family interment will occur at a later date.
