Obituary for Mary Helen Detlor (Sorley)

DETLOR, Mary Helen (nee Sorley) – After a brief illness, died peacefully at the Greater Niagara General Hospital on November 21, 2022, at the age of 94 years. Beloved wife of the late Harold A. Detlor (2009). Loving mother of Linda Detlor-Cross and her husband Robert G. Cross, of Virgil, Ontario and Thomas Harold “Tom” Detlor of Vancouver, B.C. Dear sister of John Scott “Jack” Sorley and his wife Margaret, of Niagara Falls. Dear sister-in-law of Carla Sorley, of Maple Heights, Ohio. Predeceased by her loving brother James “Jim” Sorley, of Maple Heights, Ohio, her brother Alexander “Alex” Sorley, of Niagara Falls, and her nephew Robroy “Robbie” James, of Newark Ohio. Predeceased by sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marion and James “Jim” Holman, of Pelham “Fenwick” Ontario; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Hugh and Alice Detlor, Lorne and Julie Detlor, and her stepsister Margaret Patterson, all of Niagara Falls. Mary Helen will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She taught at Belhaven and Bedford Park schools in the 60’s and 70’s. Helen was active as a Brown Owl in the 6th Stamford Girl Guide Brownie Pack and the Women’s Auxiliary for the 1st Niagara Scout Group at the Scout Hut. She was a member of the St John’s Anglican Church where she was a Greeter and a member of the Altar Guild. Helen and Harold enjoyed many winter holidays and cruises in Hawaii, Cuba, the Caribbean, and Mexico, as well as winter vacations in Florida with her brother Jim and his wife Carla. Mary Helen was an active, energetic, woman who had a zest for life. She was a fabulous cook and was noted for her Scottish shortbread and butter tarts. Helen was an avid reader, an accomplished knitter and crocheter, had a wonderful alto singing voice, and enjoyed listening to a wide variety of music from classical to country. She also enjoyed viewing old movies on Silver Screen TV, and collecting elephant figurines. Family will receive friends at the MORSE & SON FUNERAL HOME, 5917 Main Street on Monday, November 28th from 2-4 and 7-9 o’clock. The Funeral Service will be held in the funeral chapel on Tuesday, November 29th at 1 o’clock. Interment will follow at Lundy’s Lane Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the 1st Niagara Scout Group or St. John’s Church, Niagara Falls.
