Obituary for Robert Ernest "Bob" Chagnon

CHAGNON, Robert Ernest - With heavy hearts, we announce the unexpected passing of Robert Chagnon at home on March 31, 2021, in his 98th year. Bob leaves his loving wife of almost 74 years, Jean, their son David and daughters Barbara Eley (Jeff), Maggie Cole and Valerie Fitzgerald (Thane). He will be remembered as the best Grandpa ever by Sarah (Mark), Chris (Kelly), Cameron (Erin), Kevin (Danielle), Gordon (Lindsay), Kate (Dan) and Brad (Serena). Predeceased by his cherished grandson, Robbie. Survived by his best friend and brother Ted and fondly remembered by many great-grandchildren, friends, cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and extended and blended family.
Bob was born in Hamilton in 1923, the eldest of two boys. During WWII Bob served three years in the Signal Corp of the R.C.A.F. and then went on to graduate from McMaster University with a degree in Chemistry. Bob and Jean married in 1947 and moved to Niagara Falls after Bob graduated from Teachers’ College. There they happily settled into family life as Bob enjoyed his teaching career. Bob was an active member of Stamford Lane United Church for over 60 years. There, both Bob and Jean made many lifelong friends. Bob retired at age 58 from his position as head of the Science Department at Westlane S.S., and then moved on to a second career as a piano tuner. He was a founding member of the Niagara Falls Curling Club and an avid golfer. He enjoyed golfing and curling well into his 90’s. Music was an important part of Bob’s life. He was instrumental in securing a new pipe organ for the church, he rang and sang in the Rainbow Ringers Bell choir and the church senior choir, and also enjoyed singing in the Jay Singers Choir.
“Grandpa Bob” was loved and respected by all. His “punny” sense of humour will be missed, as will his love and dedication to Jean and his whole family. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held for all family and friends at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to MORSE & SON FUNERAL HOME, 5917 Main St. Niagara Falls, ON.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Walker Family Cancer Centre or the Robert David Shuttleworth Memorial Fund (at ldatd.on.ca).
