DENYS Sonia RN – In the early morning of February 16, 2021, at the age of 51, surrounded by her dogs Maddie and Mylo and brother Peter after a valiant and courageous fight for nine years we ended our journey together. She has gone ahead with no pain or suffering anymore. Sonia leaves behind her broken-hearted brother Peter or as she would call him “Senor Froggy”, her four-legged children, Maddie (Mob Dog) and Mylo and her four-legged nephew, Sash, best friend of 30 years, Shelby Banas, brother-in law Bohdan Drachewych and nephew Oleksa Drachewych (Andrea). Also survived by relatives in Ukraine. She is predeceased by her father Michael (1996), sister Vera (2016) and mother Anna (2019). Sonia attended Lincoln Centennial Public School and Laura Secord Secondary School in St. Catharines, graduating as an Ontario Scholar in 1989. She then went ahead to pursue a career in Nursing, graduating from the Niagara College Nursing Program in 1992. Sonia ventured out to Texas, working at the Corpus Christi Medical Centre, and after a brief stint, she moved back to St. Catharines working at both the Hotel Dieu and the St. Catharines General Hospitals in the Orthopedic Departments and also Heidehof Home for The Aged. When Sonia was diagnosed in 2012 with breast cancer, she could not work any further. She was a caregiver by heart, both in her career and with our mother. She loved her Ukrainian heritage, her dogs, the 80’s hairband music, dancing and could be found every weekend dancing the night away at Frado’s and Casa d’Oro with her best friend back in the day. She loved to shop and loved her jewelry and all things sparkly. Sonia loved to laugh, go to the movies, concerts, Italian food, and a good cocktail or glass of wine. She was always giving and trustworthy, the type of friend you could call anytime no matter how much time had lapsed, and it would be like no time had passed at all. As her only brother there are no words that can express how blessed I have been to have Sonia as my sister. I only wish that I could see you come walking through the door, one more time. I wish I could hear her voice but that is no more. I know you can feel my tears and you don’t want me to cry, yet my heart is broken because I can’t understand why someone so precious had to leave this earth so soon. I pray that God will give me strength and somehow get me through, as I struggle with the heartache of losing you. Thank you to Stacey Lafontaine, at LHIN for all your help during our journey with Sonia and Carly and Janet of Paramed for the extras and all the rest of you for your help.
