Obituary for Thomas Victor "Tom" Anthes

ANTHES, Thomas Victor—peacefully, with family at his side, at Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital, March 29, 2021, a day before his 70th birthday. Beloved husband of Wendy. Loving father of Emily, Fiona and her husband Alex, Colin and his partner Grace. Predeceased by his brother, Richard, whose memory he cherished always. Lovingly remembered by his nieces, nephews, cousins, and honorary family members. Tom lived a vibrant, multifaceted life filled with good people and memorable experiences. Born and bred an athletic Niagara Falls boy, he attended Stamford Collegiate, where he won SOSSA titles in wrestling and football, largely under the guidance of his revered coach Doug Aitcheson. He went on to Trinity College, University of Toronto, garnering a degree in business and commerce. He treasured the friends and memories he made along the way all his life. Tom’s professional work was tightly bound to family and community. In the early 1970’s he joined his chemist father’s company, offering innovative and environmentally friendly methods of supporting the ferrous metals industry. In Haliburton, he took ownership of his uncle’s lakeside business Maple Sands Resort, which he kept for nearly two decades. In Niagara he was probably best known as the owner of Rolling Meadows Golf & Country Club for 24 years. Working especially with superintendent Ted Bishop, he saw Rolling Meadows develop from an incomplete 14-hole track into a much-loved championship golf course. His work there also introduced him to Wendy Evans, whom he later married and loved dearly for the rest of his days. Tom’s interests remained open and expanding throughout his life. He played classical piano, flew airplanes, served as president of the Niagara Falls Curling Club, coached basketball, built all kinds of structures, donated to numerous charities, looked after many beloved animals, and supported his family in their every endeavor. He will be missed, but he will be loved more. Under current pandemic conditions, regulations have been set in place that limit the number of visitors allowed in the funeral home at a given time.
