Anton's Surprise

Anton and the love of his life, Laura, shared a love of birds. I first met them both when they came to my aviary to adopt some retired Linnies. Over time, they adopted a number of my retired birds, one of which was very special and dear to their hearts. She was a sweet, gentle hen named Aspen. Sadly, Aspen passed away leaving Anton and Laura with a great sense of loss. Shortly thereafter, I set up Aspen's son with a beautiful hen and their daughter reminded me so much of Aspen that I knew this baby was meant for Anton and Laura so, I contacted Anton to see if he would help me surprise Laura with the gift of Aspen's granddaughter. Anton was thrilled and excited to be part of the plan. He was to take Laura to their favourite restaurant and I was to "unexpectedly" appear with the baby bird in tow. When I arrived, I noticed that Anton was getting emotional so I asked him to take Laura to his truck and I would meet them in a minute as I had something to show them. The chick was safely tucked into a pretty round box with holes poked around the edges for air but were hidden under the lid. I placed the box on Laura's lap and asked her to read the accompanying card that had a poem written "from Aspen" about her granddaughter. Anton, sitting beside her in the front seat was already quietly weeping, knowing what was about to take place. I was in the back seat and watched as Laura opened the box and the baby crawled out and up under Laura's chin for head rubs. Anton mustered the strength to say "she's all yours Laura... She's just for you. She's Aspen's granddaughter " we were all crying with the joy of it all. It's rare to be witness to such a love and bond like the one between Anton and Laura. Anton adored Laura and delighted in doing anything that would make her smile. She was his safe haven. I feel blessed to have met Anton and will miss his smile and the twinkle in his eye, especially when he was talking about Laura or the birds that they loved. Gone too soon, forever in our hearts.
