Madeline Solose (Schankula)
SOLOSE, Madeline (nee Schankula) Passed away peacefully, with family by her side, at the St. Catharines General Hospital on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at the age of 93. Beloved wife of the late Anthony Solose (1996). Loving mother of Kathleen Solose (Erich Keser) of Saskatoon, Jane Solose of Kansas City, Missouri, and Deborah (Michael) Clarke of Flagler Beach, Florida, and cherished grandmother of Ariel Solose (Shawn Erker) of Vancouver, and Michelle and Jonathon Clarke of Flagler Beach, Florida. Dear sister of Anne Bermel of Brantford. Predeceased by her parents, Mary and Kaspar Schankula and brother Henry. Born in Kübekháza, Hungary, Madeline immigrated to Canada with her parents at age 7 and resided in Stevensville. She eventually settled in Niagara Falls after marrying her sweetheart, Tony in 1946. Madeline and Tony owned and operated the Horseshoe Falls Motor Inn for 26 years until their retirement in 1985. They enjoyed traveling together in their retirement years and ultimately settled in St. Catharines. Madeline was recognized as the longest living member of the Niagara German Canadian Club - a member for 73 years. She was previously a member of the Daughters of Isabella with Our Lady of Peace Church. Madeline enjoyed baking, word puzzles, Sudoku, “surfing the web” and had a keen interest in world politics. A special thank you to Dr. Ali and the nursing staff at St. Catharines General Hospital for their compassionate care of Madeline.
