My Best Friend

Werther's candies in his pockets, twiddling his thumbs, or twirling his hair. My Papaw will always be with me everywhere. He was my collect call from only a few miles away when I couldn't find a ride, and always a date at Wendy's before he took me home. My Papaw was always there for me. He was the only one I ever felt comfortable asking for help.  He simply was my best friend and we truly enjoyed being there for one another. Taught me how to drive (at 13) on some backroads in his truck. I thought he was the coolest and he trusted me with his life. It made me feel huge in a world that ofter made me feel small. He also took me to get my drivers license. He waited while I took the test and immediately took me on a long ride afterwards, where I was terrified but didn't led on at all, and he was as comfortable and happy as could be. Grilled cheese sandwiches with mayo and vanilla ice cream floats with Sprite. Heavenly bliss with my Papaw at my side. Holding hands as we prayed before each meal, I'm so thankful to have had this angel in my life. I sometimes look back now and wonder if he was meant for me as much as anyone else on this earth. How my childhood could have been so different without him by my side. Monopoly and cheeckers any time. K&W breakfast Saturday mornings and church on Sunday. How can I say all that one means to me. Words will never know my heart. But Papaw you are with me always. Till we meet again. Forever, your best friend and granddaughter.

Always, Amanda
