Obituary for Sophia Maria "Ria" Scholtens (ter Horst)

Sophia Maria "Ria" Scholtens (ter Horst)
SCHOLTENS, Sophia, Maria (Ria) (ter Horst) – Passed away peacefully with grace and dignity on Friday December 13, 2019 at Hospice Niagara, St. Catharines at the age of 92. Survived by her loving family; Mary Ann (John) Voogt (Peter, John, Allison), Albert (Thiel) Scholtens (Virginia, Elizabeth, Albert, Jesse), Joanne (Blair) Schiebel (Lee, Lauren), Alice (Ron) Andruchow (Kristin, Katie, Brian), 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
Also survived by brother-in-law Albert Scholtens, sisters-in-law Haike Visser and Kay Nywening, niece Annemarie (Jan) Blom-Valentien and nephew Herman (Giny) ter Horst of the Netherlands. Predeceased by her beloved husband Hendrik (2002), parents, siblings, in-laws and infant grandson (1972).
Ria was born in Groningen, the Netherlands and immigrated to Canada with her husband, 4 young children, and mother-in-law in 1956. She was a kind and dedicated nurse for more than 30 years.
Ria was passionate about her family and was equally loved in return. She was full of wisdom, generous and welcomed all who came to her door. She provided many cups of coffee, cake and meals and made sure guests always left with a parcel of food. She enjoyed classical music, old hymns, her clocks, cats, good food, nature, and her daily crossword puzzle (which she did in ink). Ria also loved looking after her condominium’s gardens until she was 90, which won several Trillium awards for “most beautiful”.
Heartfelt thanks for the compassionate care Ria received while at Hospice and to her condominium earth angels who visited and supported her during her illness. Thank you also to Leonna (LHIN) and staff at the various healthcare agencies for the exceptional care and kindness shown to Ria these past months.
Ria was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
Private interment has taken place. Funeral service at MORSE AND SON FUNERAL HOME, 5917 Main Street, Niagara Falls, Ontario on Thursday December 19, 2019. Visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to service. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice Niagara, St. Catharines or Ronald McDonald House in honour of Ria.
